What We Love About Living Here!


  • Of all the lots in Charles Village, lots on the east side of Calvert and the west side of Guilford (where our house is located) are by far the deepest lots in the neighborhood, at about 155 feet from the front sidewalk to the alley. The significance of this is that our house has a front yard, front porch, back porch, generous backyard, and four car parking. We bring this up because we didn't even realize this when we bought ours - we basically just got lucky.
  • In terms of livability, our house being in the middle of the block seems much quieter than the houses near the ends of the block, where people are constantly stopping at the stop signs.
  • Guilford Ave, being a two-way street that ends at 21st Street and University Blvd, is not a through-street and sees a small fraction of the traffic (and resulting noise) of Calvert and St. Paul Street. Stop signs at each end means people are going much slower. This is another fact we overlooked while considering houses in the neighborhood, and just got lucky.
  • Of all the blocks in the neighborhood, only the west side of the 3000 block of Guilford has the benefit of three-story houses that face two-story houses. This is really nice in terms of natural light, much more of which gets to the front rooms of the house in the morning.
  • Not that it's of significance given the four car parking, but Guilford Avenue doesn't have a weekly street sweeping day.
  • Our house backs up to a professionally managed residential coop (The Gilman) which performs frequent property cleaning and maintenance and manages trash collection for its residents. For this reason, it is always clean - no messy neighbors.
  • Johns Hopkins University security patrol has a frequent presence on our street and in the alley.
  • The alley is cleaned and swept several times per week by the Charles Village Community Benefits District (CVCBD).


In terms of walkability, we have found our house to rate very highly. Aside from the proximity to bars and restaurants, of which there are many, we are lucky to have Eddie's Grocery Store, a CVS pharmacy, Union Memorial Hospital, Bank of America, Starbucks, FedexKinkos, and the bus stops of St Paul St (MTA, Hopkins Shuttle, Circulator) all within three blocks.
